GOALKEEPER Joe Day has backed manager Warren Feeney to get things right at Newport County AFC, insisting he’s the right man to take the club forward.

County, who are 22nd in League Two, take on bottom club Cambridge United at Rodney Parade this afternoon seeking a second win of the season and first victory at home since March.

Despite fans’ frustrations, Feeney has repeatedly stated his belief that the squad is better than last season and will come good soon.

And Day, one of the team’s standout performers so far despite conceding 12 goals in seven games, is right behind his manager.

“I firmly believe he’s the right man,” said the Exiles number one. “I think he’s put a great squad together over the summer and for me as a player it’s great to come in every day and train with him.

“The main thing with Warren is that he’s so positive and that goes through the changing room and we’re all really positive that it’s only a matter of time before we get the results we want.

“Whenever you get a new team together it always takes time to gel. It’s not an overnight thing – it’s not going to happen over five or 10 games.

“I think throughout the whole season we will progress.

“I think it’s a far better squad of players this year,” he added. “The characters we’ve got are much more mentally strong.

“There’s also an improvement in ability and the mental strength and characters are going to carry us through the bad patches.”

Day also agrees that today’s match cannot be labelled a ‘must-win’ game but he knows that the Exiles desperately need three points at home.

He added: “It’s a bit early in the season for must-wins I think. It would be nice to win the game but it’s a bit early to be talking about six-pointers and stuff like that.

“The home form is something we’re aware of and we want to change because we want to bring more fans back.

“And for the fans that come to every home game we want to put on a performance and get a result for them – we’re desperate for it.

“I think everyone’s aware of the frustrations but we can’t let that affect us.”

Day also paid tribute to new goalkeeping coach James Bittner, who he credits with improving his form after a below-par 2015-2016 season.

“I think he’s brought the best out of me, he’s brought my confidence back,” said the 26-year-old.

“The majority of last season I was frustrated with myself and I think everything – being at the lower end of the table and performances not being great – I let that affect me.

“Confidence was low throughout the whole squad and that affects things.

“But my confidence is back up and I feel like I’m back to where I should be.”
