NEWPORT County AFC brought the curtain down on their season at Rodney Parade with a 1-0 defeat to Notts County. This is what we learnt from the game.

1. Warren Feeney could be a very busy man in the summer

Feeney made seven changes for the visit of the Magpies but those given a chance to impress failed to do so on the day.

Others in the squad haven’t been at the races either this season – 10 wins from 45 matches says it all – so it’s clear that Feeney will have to make changes in the summer.

The players involved at Wimbledon next weekend will get one more chance to stake a claim to be at the club next season, though it could be too little, too late.

2. Premier League experience is a useful commodity

Okay, Notts County haven’t exactly shaken things up in League Two this season but in Roy Carroll, Alan Smith and Jon Stead they have three former Premier League stars who provide a wealth of experience to their squad.

One or two similar players – yes, wage demands would have to be taken into consideration first – in the Newport ranks next term would be good for the club’s youngsters.

Surely having people who have played at the very top level can only be positive for the rest of the squad.

3. The pressure is off Newport so why a reluctance to pull the trigger?

Warren Feeney spoke after Saturday’s game about how the players’ confidence has been hit by the recent run of winless games.

So perhaps that is the reason why a number of the players are reluctant to have a go at goal when a shot is on.

Okay, they are not going to hit the target every time but they shouldn’t be afraid to pull the trigger, rather than ship the ball on to a teammate or allow the opposition to close them down.

4. Tom Meechan deserves to start at least one game this season

The former St Neots man has had to be patient since arriving at the club earlier this season, with only two substitute appearances to his name to date.

Saturday might have seemed like the perfect opportunity to give him his first start in black and amber, yet he didn’t even get any game time at all.

With only one game left, and boss Warren Feeney suggesting more changes will be made for that, maybe Meechan will get the start he has been waiting for.

5. The fans deserved a better send off

Nearly 5,000 went to Rodney Parade on Saturday, the majority hoping Newport could sign off at home with a win after a very testing season for those on and off the pitch.

They would have been pleased to see some of the fringe players get starts and happy with the start their side made to the contest.

However, the hosts are on a 10-game winless streak for a reason and the end product wasn’t on the button again.
