NEWPORT’S Chris Gunter admits his parents Sarah and Gerald are ‘fuming’ at having to choose between watching him at Euro 2016 and attending his brother Marc’s wedding in Mexico.

The former St Julian’s High School pupil, who is due to win his 72nd cap in Friday’s quarter-final in Lille, says the fact that his brother is getting married next week has caused chaos.

Marc will miss the historic clash with Belgium having flown to Mexico yesterday but his parents will be in France to cheer on Chris.

And, if Wales get past the Belgians, they are set to stay on to watch the semi-final in Lyon next Wednesday and will therefore miss the wedding.

“Marc is missing it and I think he’s devastated but… it’s his own fault really,” joked Gunter, who was supposed to be best man.

“You speak to my parents and they’re fuming.

“It’s his own fault. He’s been to every game here and he hasn’t been in work for a month.

“It’s caused chaos – you wouldn’t begin to imagine the trouble it’s caused.”

Asked what Marc would do if Wales made the final in Paris on July 10 – three days after he ties the knot on the other side of the world – Chris added: “I’m not sure what he’d do. He might be divorced by then!”

The Gunter parents have nailed their colours to the mast, however, and they will stay in France for as long as Wales do.

“They’re coming on Friday and [after that] they’re just waiting to see, which to me is no problem and to Marc is no problem,” he said.

“To my mum it is – having to choose – but she’s certainly not going to go to Mexico on her own and you’re not going to get my dad there if we’re in the semi-finals so she hasn’t got a choice!

“I don’t think my dad cares either because Marc probably doesn’t want to be there [in Mexico] himself.

“It’s crazy really but it’s just one of those things.”

Gunter is certainly not feeling too sorry for Marc or his fiancée.

He added: “I haven’t spoken to Danielle for a good few weeks but she’s in Mexico for two weeks so she can’t complain.

“They’ll have a great time and if it works out then it does and if not it’s probably a great situation either way.

“Friday will be interesting when they’re all sat around a little TV in Mexico trying to find the game.

“But hopefully nobody’s at the wedding – it would be fantastic if he’s on his own!”
