THE Dragons Ladies won the inaugural Welsh Rugby Union Regional 7s tournament at Principality Stadium after rallying in stunning style from three narrow defeats.

The Dragons grew throughout the event in the capital after losing all three pool games by small margins, 12-7 to Cardiff Blues, 12-5 to the Ospreys and 12-10 to the Scarlets.

They maintained their composure and reaped the rewards in the knockout stages, edging out the Blues 17-14 before a superb 35-14 victory against the Scarlets in the final.

"They played the best sevens throughout the tournament," said coach Nick Wakley, who was at the helm when the Dragons men won the Singha Premiership 7s last summer.

"The girls really bought into it, kept possession, scored some brilliant tries and really grew through the tournament.

"We knew that we would be in with a shout after playing some good stuff in the pool and they deserved the win. It was a real team effort."

The tournament was the first of four with knockout stages set to be played at the Foster's National 7s at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park in August.
