ANGUS O'Brien features in the Singha Premiership 7s tomorrow night but backs coach Shaun Connor expects him to be knocking on the door to make Newport Gwent Dragons' starting XV this season.

The 20-year-old fly-half has featured in the pre-season fixtures against Nottingham and the Scarlets but sits out Saturday's 15-a-side game against Cardiff Blues.

Instead he will be returning to the Twickenham Stoop for the Singha Premiership 7s as he tries to help the Dragons go one better than last year when they were edged out by Gloucester in the final.

O'Brien burst onto the scene last year and produced one of the performances of the season when pulling the strings in the stunning European Challenge Cup victory against Stade Francais in Paris.

As you'd expect of a young fly-half, he struggled for consistency but Connor expects him to be pushing Jason Tovey and Dorian Jones harder this season.

"All three have trained really well over the summer and have had game time in pre-season," said Connor, himself a former 10.

"We just need to see which one suits the game we are going to play in Connacht (in the Guinness Pro12 opener a week on Friday) and can control the game for us."

He continued: "Angus has got all the skills, he just needs to get experience. We all remember Stade Francais so he obviously has the talent, it's just getting his game to be more consistent."

O'Brien, who played for Wales sevens last season, is joined in the squad by fellow seniors Geraint Rhys Jones, Matthew Pewtner, Ollie Griffiths, James Benjamin, Luc Jones and Ashton Hewitt.

Captain Geraint Rhys Jones, Pewtner and Griffiths helped win the Welsh leg in Cardiff earlier this month and three influential Principality Premiership specialists are also included again.

Player of the Cardiff round Elliot Frewen is joined in the squad by his Newport teammate Jonny Lewis and Ebbw Vale flanker Luke Crocker, who played for Wales on the European Rugby Grand Prix Series this summer, adds more sevens experience.

Wasps will be strongly fancied for the tournament after romping to success in their leg in Coventry and they once again include England aces Christian Wade and Elliot Daly.

The Dragons kick off finals night against Sale Sharks at 6pm and their reward for progress could be another encounter with the Cherry and Whites, who are looking for a hat-trick of titles.

Supporters wishing to cheer on Wakley's team can book a place on a bus to the Stoop that leaves Rodney Parade at 2pm.

Tickets – including travel and entry to the ground – cost £30 for adults and £25 for under-16s. Call the Rodney Parade Ticket Office on 01633 674990 or email ticketing@rodneyparadeltd.com to make bookings.
