A SCHOOL in Abergavenny hosted the best young cyclists from Team Rwanda Cycling at a special assembly.

The team, who are participating in a UK Tour in partnership with Dassi Bikes, paid a special visit to King Henry VIII School earlier this month.

Pupils listened intently to a presentation by the team and their coach Sterling Magnell, who detailed the team's story of being formed from tragedy.

Team Rwanda Cycling was formed by survivors of the 1994 genocide as way to begin the 'healing process' after their horrific experiences.

Many of the riders lost family members and in most cases are now the main income generators for large family groups.

Mr Magnell views this tour as a 'vital element' in the continued development of these young cyclists, saying: “We are heading to the UK to face the challenge of turning our best young Rwandan talent who possess world class pedal power into cornering and close quarters racing masters.”

The team brought along one of their Dassi Bikes, the only carbon fibre racing bike fully manufactured in the UK.

A question and answer session took place after the presentation and both pupils and staff put various questions to the team.

Head teacher Elspeth Lewis spoke about school's affinity with cycling, with Team GB cyclist Becky James among their former pupils.

Speaking at the event, Monmouthshire County Council leader councillor Jim Higginson said that it was 'an honour' to welcome the Rwandan cyclist.

He added: "I am extremely pleased that they gave up their time today to meet us. Their story is very inspirational and I wish them the best of luck in their cycling events this coming weekend and in the future."
