A SIX year-old boy from Cwmbran has won a competition to design a logo for the nursery attached to his school.

Liam Jones of Greenmeadow Primary beat children, some up to five years older than him, with his logo for Precious Gems Nursery.

He was presented with one of the first batch of t-shirts featuring his design from Precious Gems nursery staff earlier this week.

In April, the nursery launched the competition and pupils had two weeks to come up with a design.

Entries were judged anonymously by Greenmeadow head teacher Michelle Green and teacher Beth Newton before the winner and twelve runners-up were announced.

Nursery manager Joanne Hampson, 51, said: “It’s a very good design partially of his hands and I’m glad we didn’t have to choose and left it up to the teachers.

“We came up with the idea of the competition to get the school children involved as it’s important to have ties with the school.”

Ms Hampson and Louise Peploe started the nursery, which is attached to the school, in October and Ms Hampson said the school has been "very supportive and encouraging" over that time.

Liam's grandmother Janet Pew, added: “We never expected Liam to win. After they announced he won in assembly, Liam just couldn’t stop smiling.

“Because all of the older children took part it was just such a nice surprise and he really deserves it. I was told there were a few gasps by the year six children at the time.”
