THE Blaenavon Family Fun Day brought a host of smiles and happy faces to the Torfaen, despite the Welsh weather not following the mood of the day.

Held on day after the World Heritage Day, around 500 attended the fun and frolics at Blaenavon Rugby Club with around 500 people enjoying the array of entertainment on offer.

Chris Dukes, from the Blaenavon Town Team, said: “It was a lovely day and nice to see the local community of all ages enjoying themselves.

“It was really nice to see the local traders, crafts people and residents working together to make the event a great success.

“It was really nice to hear all of the positive comments about the Blaenavon Community Garden Project, who had a stall to raise awareness, of all the good work they are doing in the town.

Clare Dullea, Bron Afon’s community manager for Blaenavon, said: “Despite the weather we had a great turnout of residents from the town.”

A team from South Wales Fire and Rescue service won the tug of war at the Blaenavon family fun day, and the firefighters are planning to return to defend it in 2017.

She added: “The tug of war was popular and the firefighters have said they will be back next year to defend their title.

“We did a survey with residents and they told us that the things they like about Blaenavon were the community spirit and fun events."

All the money raised will be put towards the town’s Winter Wonderland, which will take place later this year on Saturday, December 10.

The day was organised by the Blaenavon Town Team and Bron Afon.
