A FUNDRAISING group has scooped a number of fundraising awards from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) – for their relentless determination in the fight against heart disease.

The Abergavenny and Pontypool fundraising group has 11 members, to whom certificates were presented at an event held on Usk Road in Pontypool on Saturday, June 27.

The group took home the accolade for their fundraising efforts, helping the charity to raise money to fund its lifesaving research.

Despite the fact that the group was formed less than 12 months ago they have raised thousands of pounds already.

Hazel Jenkins was individually nominated for the Volunteer of the Year award.

Mrs Jenkins, 84, became a member of this group last August when it formed and did so because her husband was one of the first people in Wales to receive open-heart surgery in the 1960s.

He was told he had 50/50 chance of surviving and would never work again. But six months later he was back down the pit and lived a full life for a further 33 years.

Chairman Sylvia Jones also collected the certificate for the Group Fundraisers award, which they were also presented with.

Mrs Jones said: “I am delighted to have been given such a special award on behalf of the group as there are so many worthy volunteers who give their time to the British Heart Foundation."

“I have met some amazing people and have lovely memories fundraising for the British Heart Foundation.”

Volunteers play a vital role in the work of the British Heart Foundation. Catherine Campbell, community fundraising manager for South East Wales said: “I am delighted that we can recognise this groups phenomenal commitment to the BHF.

“As a group they are always mapping out events and seem to effortlessly juggle numerous tasks at one time to help bring in as much money for the charity as possible."

“I would love for other people in Torfaen and Monmouthshire to join our fight for every heartbeat in the UK.”
