JOBLESS young people who are learning to fix bikes will go on a charity ride today [Wednesday] to raise cash for a Christmas Day lunch.

The Torfaen young people have been enrolled onto a project to boost their employment prospects by learning how to write a spotless CV and pass a job interview.

The four-week course will also equip them with more practical skills by teaching them to refurbish second-hand bicycles.

And as an added bonus, they will get to keep the bikes they have worked on at the end of project, called Cycle That Works.

Today [December 17] ,the five young people aged between around 16 and 24 will go on a charity ride between Griffithstown and Llantarnam.

All the money raised will be donated to the Trac 2 charity shop in Trevethin to support their community Christmas Day lunch.

Social landlord Bron Afon Community Housing is behind the innovative employment scheme.

Dafydd Hellard, from Bron Afon’s Connect and Create team, said: “This project is helping the young people visit their job centre and various other projects, which in turn has helped to raise their confidence.

“One young person had built up a friendship circle but recently had to move to a new area. His new bike will make it easier for him to visit his friends.

“A bonus for them all is at the end of the course they will keep the bike they have been working on.”

Cycle That Works is one of several programmes Bron Avon runs to help people get back into work.
